Custom Mobile App Development for Small and Medium-Sized Businesses

Custom mobile app development means designing and building an iPhone and Android app around how your business actually works. Apptavio builds them for small and medium-sized businesses, and shows you a free interactive concept first.

What it can include

Built around your customers
Screens and features chosen for the things your customers already do with you: booking, ordering, checking progress, collecting rewards or getting in touch.
iPhone and Android from one codebase
We build with React Native, Expo and TypeScript, so one well-tested codebase serves both platforms and stays easier to maintain.
Accounts and profiles
Customer sign-in, saved details, history and preferences, so returning customers do not have to start from scratch.
Notifications that people opt into
Reminders, status updates and offers sent as push notifications, once a customer has given permission.
Connections to your existing systems
Where your booking, e-commerce or CRM software offers an API, the app can read from and write to it instead of creating another system to manage.
A simple way to manage content
Opening hours, services, prices and announcements can be updated without releasing a new version of the app, when the project includes a content backend.

What custom mobile app development means for a small business

A custom app is one designed for your business rather than assembled from a generic template. It uses your name, your branding and your services, and — more importantly — it is shaped around the reasons your customers come back to you. A dog groomer's app is about pet profiles and the next appointment. A garage's app is about the car, the next service and approving work. A café's app is about ordering ahead and collecting stamps.

Apptavio designs and builds affordable custom iPhone and Android apps for small and medium-sized businesses in the UK, the US and Europe. We work best with businesses that already have a website and recurring customers but do not yet have a dedicated app.

Who it is for

Custom development is a good fit if:

  • your customers return regularly — weekly, monthly or seasonally;
  • they currently book, order or check things by phone, email or a website that is awkward on a small screen;
  • you want a direct channel to your customers that does not depend on social media reach;
  • you have an existing system (booking software, an online shop, a CRM) and want customers to use it from their phone.

It is probably not the right first step if you have very few repeat customers, or if a well-built mobile website would do the job. We will tell you if we think that is the case.

See your app before you buy

Most agencies ask you to imagine the result from a proposal document. We do it the other way round. From your existing public website we prepare a free, personalised, interactive app concept: your business name and colours, your real services or products, and screens designed for your type of business.

  1. You share your website address through our request form.
  2. We analyse the public content: services, products, opening hours, branding and imagery.
  3. We design an interactive concept that suits your kind of business.
  4. A person on our team reviews it before anything is sent.
  5. You receive a private link and can open it on your phone or computer.
  6. If you want to go further, we agree the scope together and send a quote.

The concept is a prototype that runs in a browser. It is not a finished app, it is not in the App Store, and features such as booking or payment are simulated. Its job is to make the conversation concrete. There is no obligation and we do not ask for payment details.

What we build with

Production apps are built with React Native, Expo and TypeScript. That gives you one codebase for both iPhone and Android, which usually means lower build and maintenance costs than two separate native apps. Where an app needs a device capability that the shared code does not cover, we add native modules. Our React Native development page explains the trade-offs in more detail.

Typical features

Every project is different, but small-business apps tend to draw on a familiar set of building blocks:

  • Booking and appointments — choosing a service, a time and, where relevant, a staff member.
  • Ordering and shopping — browsing products, a basket and checkout through a standard payment provider.
  • Accounts — sign-in, saved details, order or visit history.
  • Loyalty — digital stamp cards, points or member rewards.
  • Status updates — "your car is ready", "your order is on its way", "your pet is ready for collection".
  • Notifications — reminders and announcements to customers who have opted in.
  • Content — services, prices, opening hours, news and offers that you can update.

How the project runs

  1. Concept and scope. We start from the free concept and your feedback, then write down exactly which screens and features are included.
  2. Quote. You receive a written quote based on that scope. Estimates are not binding until agreed in writing.
  3. Design. We turn the concept into detailed screens that follow Apple's and Google's design conventions and accessibility good practice.
  4. Build and test. We build in stages and share test versions with you on your own phone (TestFlight on iPhone, internal testing on Google Play).
  5. Store submission. We prepare store listings, screenshots and privacy information and submit the app from your developer accounts.
  6. Launch and maintenance. After release, apps need updates for new operating system versions, store policy changes and your own improvements. See mobile app maintenance.

What affects the cost

Our indicative starting price is from €1,499 for a focused app. The final price depends on:

  • Screens — how many distinct screens and flows the app needs.
  • Features — booking, ordering, loyalty and messaging each add work.
  • Integrations — connecting to your booking system, shop or CRM depends on the API it offers.
  • Backend — whether the app needs its own server and database or can rely on your existing systems.
  • Authentication — customer accounts, sign-in methods and account deletion.
  • Payments — card payments through a provider such as Stripe, or in-app purchases where Apple and Google require them.
  • Notifications — reminders, segmentation and scheduling.
  • Native capabilities — camera, location, wallet passes and similar features.
  • Maintenance — ongoing updates after launch.

We would rather start with a smaller, well-made first version and add to it than build everything at once.

Honest limitations

  • Store review is not ours to decide. Apple and Google review every app against their own guidelines and make the final decision.
  • An app must do more than your website. Apple's guidelines discourage apps that simply repackage a website, so we focus on features that genuinely benefit from being an app.
  • Push notifications need permission. Customers must opt in on iPhone, and on recent Android versions too. Plan for some customers to say no.
  • Integrations depend on other companies. If your existing software has no API, or limits it to certain plans, we may need a different approach.
  • Apps need upkeep. Operating systems and store rules change every year, so budget for maintenance.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a custom mobile app cost?

Our indicative starting price is from €1,499 for a focused app. The final price depends on the number of screens, features, integrations, whether you need a backend and customer accounts, payments, notifications, native capabilities and ongoing maintenance. You receive a written quote after we agree the scope.

Do I need to know what features I want before contacting you?

No. Many businesses start with a rough idea. The free app concept built from your website is a practical way to react to something concrete and decide what matters.

Will my app be approved by the App Store and Google Play?

We build to Apple's and Google's published guidelines and prepare the submission carefully, but the review decision belongs to Apple and Google. Nobody can honestly guarantee approval.

Who owns the app and the store accounts?

The developer accounts are set up in your business's name, and Apple's and Google's fees are paid by you directly to them. Ownership of the code and handover terms are written into the agreement before work starts.

Is the free concept the finished app?

No. It is an interactive concept that runs in a browser so you can see and feel the idea. The production app is designed and built after you decide to go ahead.
