iPhone apps for businesses with returning customers
If many of your customers carry an iPhone, an app on their home screen is one of the most direct ways to stay in touch with them. iOS app development covers designing the app, building it, testing it on real devices and publishing it on Apple's App Store.
Apptavio builds iPhone apps for small and medium-sized businesses in the UK, US and Europe: salons, garages, groomers, restaurants, studios, shops and professional services. We focus on practical apps that make repeat visits easier, rather than apps built for the sake of having one.
Who this is for
An iPhone app makes most sense when:
- your customers come back regularly and do the same things each time;
- a meaningful share of your customers use iPhones (your website analytics can tell you roughly);
- you want reminders, updates or loyalty to reach people directly;
- you are prepared to maintain the app as iOS changes each year.
How we build iOS apps
We build with React Native, Expo and TypeScript. React Native renders real native interface components, and Expo provides tooling for building, testing and submitting apps. TypeScript helps us catch mistakes before they reach your customers. Where a feature needs something specific to iOS, we can add native code.
The practical benefit for a small business is that the same codebase produces an Android app as well. You can launch on iPhone first and add Android later, or launch both together. See React Native development for the trade-offs compared with fully native Swift development.
Designing for iPhone
An iPhone app should feel like an iPhone app. We design with Apple's Human Interface Guidelines in mind:
- familiar navigation, such as a tab bar for the main sections;
- respect for the notch, Dynamic Island and home indicator areas;
- text that grows with the user's Dynamic Type setting;
- VoiceOver labels for buttons and images;
- dark mode support where it makes sense;
- touch targets large enough to tap comfortably.
See your iPhone app before you buy
Before any commitment, we can show you a free, personalised, interactive concept built from your existing website. Open the link on your iPhone and it looks and behaves like an app, with your name, colours and real services or products.
- Share your website address through our request form.
- We analyse your public content and branding.
- We design a concept that suits your type of business.
- A person reviews it before sending.
- You get a private link to try on your phone.
- If you would like to proceed, we agree the scope and send a quote.
The concept runs in the browser, and features such as booking or payments are simulated. It is a prototype to help you decide, not the finished app.
From build to App Store
- Apple Developer Program enrolment. Your business enrols in its own name; Apple charges an annual membership fee. Organisation enrolment may require details such as a D-U-N-S number, so start early.
- Build and test. We share test builds through TestFlight so you can use the app on your own iPhone.
- Store listing. We prepare the app name, description, screenshots and the privacy details Apple asks for.
- Review. Apple reviews the app against its App Review Guidelines. Reviews often complete within a few days, but timing is not guaranteed and Apple may ask questions or request changes.
- Release. Once approved, you choose when the app goes live.
Payments on iPhone
The rules depend on what you sell. Physical goods and services used outside the app — a haircut, a car service, a takeaway — can generally be paid for with a normal payment provider. Digital content or subscriptions used inside the app generally have to use Apple's In-App Purchase, which carries Apple's commission. The details are in section 3.1 of the App Review Guidelines, and we check them against your specific case.
What affects the cost
Our indicative starting price is from €1,499. The final price depends on screens, features, integrations with your existing systems, backend needs, customer accounts, payments, notifications, native capabilities such as camera, location or Wallet passes, and maintenance. Launching on iPhone and Android together adds testing and store work, though much less than building two separate apps.
Honest limitations
- Apple decides. App Review is Apple's process; we cannot guarantee approval or review times.
- Notifications need permission. iPhone users must allow notifications, and some will not.
- Website wrappers are discouraged. Apple's guidelines expect apps to offer more than a website in an app shell.
- Annual updates. New iOS versions arrive every year, and apps need occasional updates to keep working well. See mobile app maintenance.
- Developer fees go to Apple. The Apple Developer Program fee is separate from our price.

Frequently asked questions
Do you build native Swift apps?
Our production apps use React Native, Expo and TypeScript, which compile to real iOS apps and can use native modules where needed. For most small-business apps this gives a native-feeling result with lower cost and one codebase for iPhone and Android.
Do I need an Apple Developer account?
Yes. To publish on the App Store your business needs to enrol in the Apple Developer Program, which has an annual membership fee paid to Apple. We help you through enrolment; check the current fee on Apple's website.
Can you guarantee App Store approval?
No. Apple reviews every app and every update against its App Review Guidelines and makes the decision. We prepare apps carefully against those guidelines to reduce the risk of rejection.
Can I take payments in my iPhone app?
For physical goods and services used outside the app, such as appointments or products, you can usually use a normal payment provider. Digital content or subscriptions used within the app generally have to use Apple's In-App Purchase. We check which rules apply to your case.
Do I get an Android version too?
Because we use React Native, the same codebase can produce an Android app. Whether you launch both at once is a scoping and budget decision.
